ACCESS to the HALL of RESIDENCE and CHECK-IN desk
Access maps with all the itineraries and location of useful facilities will be available on the Summer School web page next Monday.
The hall of residence where we have booked your accomodations is located in Orsay.
To go directly to the hall of residence from the CDG airport (it takes around 1h15) or from
Paris downtown if you arrive by train (between 35mn and 1 hour depending on the area) :
1) Take the RER B towards Saint-Rémy-les-Chevreuse
2) Get off the train at the Orsay-Ville station
3) From the station to the « Résidence universitaire Fleming » (l5 mn walk).
If you arrive at the Orly airport (it takes around 40 minutes) :
1) Take the automated metro (Orlyval) from the airport and the RER B Antony station
2) Take the RER B towards Saint-Rémy-les-Chevreuse then follow the itinerary above.
It can also be helpful to have a look at the RATP (Paris Public Transportation Company) website where you can have information in english.
IMPORTANT: The area of Orsay and Bures-sur-Yvette is a safe and quiet place but pickpockets are quite usual
on the trains and metro in Paris area so please remain cautious with you bags, phones...
Also, if you arrive late in the evening or on Sunday afternoon, do not forget to buy something to eat for dinner before your arrival in Orsay
(the supermarket near the hall of residence is open from 8.30 am to 8.20 pm from Monday through Saturday and from 9.00 am to 12.50 am on Sunday)
since shops are closed on Sunday afternoon.
As the secretariat of the residence is closed during the week-end, a temporary check-in desk will be organised on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17
from 4.00 pm to 10.00 pm in the hall of the building D of the Village 1 (cf. map of the residence).
IMPORTANT: do not forget that transfer time from the CDG airport can easily reach 2 hours (especially during week-ends and at night when there are
far fewer trains to Orsay). So, if you cannot check-in at the hall of residence before 10.00 pm, you'd better ask a friend who will be arriving earlier to
pick-up your key for you or book a hotel-room at the airport for the night and take the RER to arrrive the following day.
If you arrive a long time before 4.00 pm and you need to store your luggage before checking-in, the best thing to do is to store your luggage in one
of the left-luggage services in one of the downtown Paris stations from where you can take the RER to come to Orsay later in the afternoon.
ROOMS and EVERY-DAY LIFE :
The rooms booked for you at the « Résidence universitaire Fleming » are individual (i.e. they are not suitable for 2 persons) with private
bathroom, hot plate and fridge. One pair of sheets and a blanket will be provided but you have to bring along pillow, towels, soap…..
Also please note that dishes, pan, cutlery… are not provided.
Do not forget that the electric outlet plugs may be different than the ones you have in your country.
Please don't forget to bring an adaptor if need be.
Laundry : there is a laundry service in Orsay open 7 days a week from 7.00 am to 9.00 pm (cf map of the area)
Night-watchman: in case of emergency, there is night-watchman in the residence (phone number will be available in the hall of the building).
ORSAY, where the hall of residence is located, is a small town but you’ll find everything you need in the city center
(supermarket, restaurants, bakeries, post-office, bookshop, pharmacy….) and all these facilities are located at a walking
distance from the residence Fleming where you’ll stay.
BURES-sur-YVETTE, is smaller with few shops but, if you’d rather buy sandwiches, viennoiserie or pastries…
for lunch than go to the cafeteria of the university, the baker is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 7.00 am to 8.00 pm.
For lunches from Monday to Friday (except Wednesdays 20 and 27 when a buffet lunch will be served in the foyer
of the conference-room, you'll have the possibility to have lunch in one of the cafeterias of the Paris-Sud University
(a full lunch will cost you a bit less than 6,00€). I'll give you the access card to the cafeteria upon your arrival
along with your key room.
INTERNET CONNECTION :
In your room:
To get connected upon your arrival, please send the MAC address of the machine you want to connect
(how to find the MAC address) to FlemNet, the administrator of the residence network help@flemnet.fr as well as your room number with a limit of 3 devices.
There is wireless connection at the residence but I suggest you to bring a wire along just in case.
Once arrived, you’ll have to configure the proxy server settings on your computer.
The internet access works thanks to the university, therefore the web access is not filtered but some applications (games…) may not work.
At IHES:
The wireless connection is free of access everywhere at IHES (wifiihes).
