We will discuss the equivalence of local functional inequalities and curvature bounds in the sense of Bakry-Emery for Markov diffusion operators. In the setting of metric measure spaces that satisfy the $RCD(K,\infty)$ condition we will see how the method allows to obtain certain new functional inequalities and their local reverse counterpart. This is joint work with Devraj Duggal, James Melbourne and Cyril Roberto.
