Heisuke Hironaka passed away on March 18, 2026, at the age of 94. The aim of this conference is to pay tribute to his tremendous contributions to mathematics, as well as to his role as a mentor to many of us in the field of singularity theory. While best known for proving the existence of the resolution of singularities in characteristic zero, H. Hironaka was also one of the founders of subanalytic geometry and made other fundamental contributions to algebraic geometry at large, leaving an immense legacy to the entire mathematical community.

He was awarded the Fields Medal in 1970 (for his work on resolution of singularities). Heisuke Hironaka received the Order of Culture (Bunka-kunsho) from the Emperor of Japan in 1975. In 2004, he received the Legion of Honour at the French Embassy in Japan (Tokyo) in recognition of his work and his commitment to the dissemination and teaching of mathematics in Japan and around the world.

H. Hironaka leaves behind a dynamic and rapidly growing community. We wish to organize a tribute conference for Heisuke Hironaka that reflects his spirit: an event open to various aspects of singularity theory, featuring speakers from different generations. The talks will focus on new, recently solved and current problems: resolution of singularities via Nash blowing-up, resolution in arbitrary characteristic, jet and arc spaces and the Nash problem from both topological and algebraic perspectives, equisingularity, and subanalytic and o-minimal geometry.

The program for this meeting will be structured around 24 presentations by researchers working on the aforementioned topics.  The event will include a poster session dedicated to junior researchers, as well as opportunities for networking and discussion.

The list of speakers who have agreed to come is as follows:

  • Janusz Adamus, Western University, Ontario, Canada
