      We propose a new data-driven reduced order model (ROM) framework that centers around the hierarchical structure of the variational multiscale (VMS) methodology and utilizes data to increase the ROM accuracy at a modest computational cost. The VMS methodology is a natural fit for the hierarchical structure of the ROM basis: In the first step, we use the ROM projection to separate the scales into three categories: (i) resolved large scales, (ii) resolved small scales, and (iii) unresolved scales. In the second step, we explicitly identify the VMS-ROM closure terms, i.e., the terms representing the interactions among the three types of scales. In the third step, instead of ad hoc modeling techniques used in VMS for standard numerical methods (e.g., finite element), we use available data to model the VMS-ROM closure terms. Thus, instead of phenomenological models used in VMS for standard numerical discretizations (e.g., eddy viscosity models), we utilize available data to construct new structural VMS-ROM closure models. Specifically, we build ROM operators (vectors, matrices, and tensors) that are closest to the true ROM closure terms evaluated with the available data. We test the new data-driven VMS-ROM in the numerical simulation of a 2D flow past a circular cylinder at Reynolds numbers Re=100, Re=500, and Re=1000. The numerical results show that the data-driven VMS-ROM is significantly more accurate than standard ROMs.

      An optimization-based approach for the reduction of parametrized conservation laws 50m Ada Lovelace

      We introduce an optimization-based model reduction framework to solve parametrized, steady conservation laws with discontinuous solution features such as shock waves. The main idea behind the proposed reduction framework is to align features in the reduced basis with features in the (online) solution. This is accomplished using a mapped formulation of the conservation law that transforms it to a fixed reference domain. In an offline procedure, we associate a domain mapping to each solution snapshot such that features, e.g., discontinuities, align in the reference domain. The snapshots (as functions over the reference domain) are effectively compressed into a linear reduced basis due to the feature alignment. The online reduced-order model then seeks the approximation in the reduced basis and an associated domain mapping that minimizes the full-order residual, which tends to align features in the online solution with the offline solution features in the reference domain. Even though we restrict solutions in the reference domain to lie in a linear subspace using the traditional model reduction ansatz, the deformation of the underlying domain implies the solution in the physical domain lies on a relevant nonlinear manifold. We demonstrate the merit of the framework with one- and two-dimensional test cases from computational fluid dynamics.

      Industrial companies rely increasingly on numerical simulation in substitution to physical prototyping in the decision-making process (design, maintenance scheduling, control). However, the context of use for these predictive numerical models often demands many queries (e.g. use under an optimization loop, for sensitivity analysis, for in-site diagnosis or control), and they are not practicable when a single query takes days of CPU. Reduced-order modelling (ROM) is a powerful tool to tremendously reduce the marginal cost of one query by learning from the previous ones. In this talk, we will give an overview of the application fields of ROM in the context of energy production and delivery, ranging from computational fluid dynamics to electromagnetism. We will focus on two use cases through which we highlight a major issue to the implementation of ROM at industrial level : independence and yet interoperability with respect to the full-order solver. We illustrate how the issue has been tackled thus far in a joint consortium of French academics and companies in the project Mordicus and offer orientations for future work on the topic.

      We will provide the state of the art and few perspectives related with current developments of reduced order methods in computational fluid dynamics. During the talk we will deal with loss of uniqueness of the parametric solution, due to bifurcations; some perspectives in fluid-structure interaction problems to enhance model reduction; as well as the development of mixed projection-data driven techniques to deal with turbulence, by increasing Reynolds number. Few illustrative applications will follow.
