Description

The distillation problem is to determine when copies of a given bipartite quantum state can be transformed to a maximally entangled state using local operations and classical communication. It is among the most important open questions in quantum information theory. After giving a detailed introduction to the problem and its current status, I will discuss how it connects to questions about tensor products of positive maps between matrix algebras. If time permits, I will present some recent results on these questions.
