Description

Let $(M,g)$ be a complete Riemannian manifold. If the sectional curvatures of $g$ are non-negative, the Cheeger--Gromoll theorem (1972) shows that the fundamental group $\pi_1(M)$ is a finitely generated virtually Abelian group.

Suppose now that only the Ricci curvature of $(M,g)$ is non-negative. Milnor proved in 1968 that the finitely generated subgroups of $\pi_1(M)$ have polynomial growth and are thus virtually nilpotent by Gromov theorem (1981). Conversely, Wei (1988) and Wilking (2000) showed that any finitely generated virtually nilpotent group can be realized as the fundamental group of a complete Riemannian manifold whose Ricci curvature is non-negative.

Milnor conjectured that $\pi_1(M)$ is always finitely generated when the Ricci curvature is non-negative. The main goal of this exposé is to present a counter-example to Milnor's conjecture that was introduced by
Bruè--Naber--Semola: on $\widetilde M = \mathbb S^3 \times \mathbb R^4$ there exists a Riemannian metric with non-negative Ricci curvature admitting a fixed point free isometric action of the group $\mathbb Q / \mathbb Z$. The construction relies on an intricate iterative process that asymptotically gives to $\widetilde M$ ``fractal'' form.
