In this talk, we will review and discuss some recents results on the spectral gap
of hyperbolic surfaces with infinite area, in a probabilistic setting. We will motivate and explain the notion of Laplace resonance and show how some tools of free probability can help in describing the spectrum in a regime of "large topology".
