Title: Environmental impacts: where is our responsibility?
Abstract : In this talk, after briefly reviewing the environmental impacts of the AI industry at large, I'll point out that the urgently needed frugality goes beyond designing small models with low cost and consumption. Our responsibility as scientists also lie in controlling the uses of our results to achieve sufficiency. This means avoiding rebound effects and misuses, and even envisioning the transformational effects on society and assessing their desirability. That's hard! I'll propose to tackle this as a collective action.
