Knowing the universal covering of a complex algebraic variety often has interesting implications for the geometry of that variety. However, little is known in general about the complex analytic manifolds that can be obtained as the universal covering of a smooth complex algebraic variety. In my talk I will focus on the potential existence of non-constant global holomorphic functions on these spaces.
