LYStriMester "MATHEMATICS, WHAT ELSE?" Philysm: mathematics impacting philosophy

Le colloque se propose d'étudier, de façon pragmatique, la question générale de l'impact des mathématiques sur la philosophie. Par pragmatique, nous ne faisons pas ici référence au pragmatisme, mais au fait que la question sera abordée non pas de façon théorique et pour elle-même, mais plutôt au travers d'exemples, qu'ils soient liés à des auteurs ou à l'émergence de nouvelles méthodes ou théories mathématiques. Parmi les situations paradigmatiques pour notre propos, on pourra penser au rôle de Newton pour la philosophie kantienne ou au rôle de la théorie des ensembles et de la logique mathématique pour la philosophie du langage et la philosophie analytique au 20e siècle. Le colloque visera à conjuguer l'analyse de tels moments historiques à celle de la situation récente et présente.

Il colloquio mira ad adottare una concezione pragmatica nell’affrontare la questione generale dell’impatto della matematica sulla filosofia. Con “pragmatico” non ci riferiamo qui al pragmatismo, ma al fatto che la questione sarà affrontata non in maniera teoretica e in quanto tale, bensì attraverso esempi collegati o a specifici studiosi o all’emergere in matematica di nuovi metodi o di nuove teorie matematiche. Come esempi di queste situazioni pragmatiche,  citiamo l’influenza avuta da Newton sulla filosofia kantiana, e il ruolo avuto dalla teoria degli insiemi e dalla logica matematica sulla filosofia del linguaggio e sulla filosofia analitica del novecento. Il colloquio mira a mettere insieme l’analisi di tali momenti della storia della matematica e della filosofia con quella della situazione recente o contemporanea. 

The colloquium aims to take a pragmatic look at the general question of the impact of mathematics on philosophy. By pragmatic, we are not referring here to pragmatism, but to the fact that the question will be approached not theoretically and for its own sake, but rather through examples, whether linked to authors or to the emergence of new mathematical methods or theories. Paradigmatic situations include the role of Newton in Kantian philosophy, and the role of set theory and mathematical logic in 20th-century philosophy of language and analytic philosophy. The colloquium aims to combine the analysis of such historical moments with that of the recent and present situation.
