Letícia Cândido: "Introduction to the Conley Index Theory"

Europe/Paris
Description
This seminar introduces the Conley index as a topological invariant for isolated invariant sets in dynamical systems. We discuss the notions of isolating neighborhoods and index pairs, and explain how the Conley index extends classical stability concepts beyond equilibria. Basic examples, including hyperbolic fixed points and periodic orbits, are presented to illustrate how the index reflects qualitative dynamical features such as attraction, repulsion, and continuation under perturbations. The goal is to provide intuition and technical foundations for using the Conley index in the analysis of both smooth and nonsmooth dynamical systems.
