Stokes waves are water waves of permanent form traveling with constant speed. Their dynamics is modeled by the Euler water wave equations, written down well over 200 years ago. Although the existence of these waves has been established for over a century, the study of their stability is far more recent. I will review analytical results on the dynamics of waves of small amplitude, as well as numerical results on the stability of near-extreme waves, waves close to the steepest wave with a 120 degree corner at its crest. All concepts will be introduced and defined as needed.
