The m-th jet scheme of an algebraic variety $X\subset \mathbf{A}^n$, roughly speaking, parametrizes germs of curves in the ambient space $\mathbf{A}^n$ having contact of order at least m+1 with X. As m varies, jet schemes contain a large amount of information about the singularities of $X$, but this information is often difficult to analyze directly, as it appears in a highly redundant and unstructured form.
In this talk, we will survey the graph of jet components, an invariant that contains some of the data encoded in jet schemes, and explain how it captures deep information about certain families of singularities.
