In this talk, I intend to give a survey of the main results obtained by the late Professor Boris Sternin (1939--2017)
and his collaborators in the theory of elliptic operators. His research embraced a variety of topics such as Sobolev problems (relative elliptic theory), elliptic theory on manifolds with singularities (including surgery techniques to calculate indices and K-homology techniques to obtain homotopy classification of elliptic operators), and noncommutative elliptic theory for operators associated with group actions (including the uniformization method, which allows one to compute the indices of elliptic operators).
