Description

Roughly speaking, a quantum group is a "non-commutative algebra of functions on a Lie group". Since their inception in the 80's (by Drinfeld and Jimbo) these algebras have attracted increasing interest, eventually leading to a whole research domain called "quantum algebra". I will explain what "quantum" means, through the general concept of deformation-quantization. Then I will define the quantum group associated to SL(2). If time permits, the relation to knot invariants will be sketched.
