Description

The existence of a strong magnetic field in heavy ion collisions (HIC) is established through different experiments like Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A strong magnetic field is also supposed to exist in a dense object like a magnetar. Thus, understanding quantum chromodynamics (QCD), which is essential to understand HICs and neutron stars, in the presence of a magnetic field is of great importance. In this talk, I will discuss some of the important features of such a magnetised medium. In particular, the QCD phase diagram in a magnetic field will be discussed using an effective QCD model and the resulting constraint on the model's parameter space. I will also try to shed some light on the response of the QCD medium to such an external field by estimating the dilepton rate (DR) coming out of it. This can as well turn into a magnetometer for HIC experiments.
