In this talk, or rather an antitalk, instead of telling you what kind of mathematics I do, I will instead tell you what happens in areas of mathematics just outside of my field of study. It will be an informal survey on topology of manifolds of dimension different from 4. We will give a quick historical recall of dimensions 1 and 2, touch the 3-dimensional topology and dive into the world of high (5+) dimensional manifolds. The aim of this antitalk is to give an important context to my research interest - smooth 4-dimensional topology.
