The mapping class group of a surface is a fundamental object in low-dimensional topology. Yet, basic questions about its linear representations remain unanswered. For example, the question of linearity remains wide open for genus g ⩾ 3 surfaces. In this talk, we will review the recent progress on the classification of low-dimensional representations of the mapping class group. We will conclude with a result of mine, stating that the (pure) mapping class group of a genus g ⩾ 7 surface has no faithful linear representations in dimension ⩽ 4g - 4.
