Description
In this mini-course, I will introduce some of the main ideas and techniques for modelling systems of many interacting particles. Starting from stochastic particle-based descriptions, I will discuss different scalings of the interactions, from mean-field regimes to strongly interacting systems, and show how they can be used to capture different effects at the macroscopic level. I will then discuss methods for deriving continuum PDE models and how microscopic interactions are reflected in the resulting equations and collective behaviour. In the second part, I will illustrate these ideas in the context of active matter and self-propelled particles, with examples including bacteria and ants.
