I will present a general method to prove existence and density for the metric topology of points, in the base of a (pure or mixed) variation of Hodge structures, at which the corresponding fiber carries non-generic Hodge tensors, using tools from functional transcendence and o-minimal geometry. I will then present some consequences on bounds on the dimension of images of period maps associated to pure variations of Hodge structures. This is partly joint work with D. Urbanik.
