Title: To categories and beyond!

 

Have you ever heard about categories? I think most of us have, even if it's just from that one friend we all had during our Masters who discovered about them and immediately went nuts. But did you know categories are just the beginning? Enriched categories, monoidal categories, model categories... so many other things we can do! In this talk, I will try to introduce a few different categorical tools and constructions via the toy example of the Derived Category over a ring. I will discuss how to localize a category, and how to localize it correctly; define dg-categories over a ring, and use them to compute the Derived Category. And if time allows, I will delve into how dg-categories are not perfect either, and how my work has been geared toward improving them.
