Presentation of the programme
In recent years, there have been major advances using techniques from Descriptive Set Theory to show, in a rigorous way, that many classical problems in Dynamical Systems are impossible to solve. In this context, a problem that can be set in a Polish space is said to be impossible to solve if it cannot be settled using inherently countable techniques. These groundbreaking results mostly lie in Ergodic Theory, with further significant advances in Topological and Smooth Dynamical Systems.
One main goal of this program is to further enhance interactions between Descriptive Set Theory and Dynamical Systems. It brings together researchers from different fields to settle some of the most famous problems in dynamics dating to the mid-20th century.
A second main goal is to expand applications of the techniques from Descriptive Set Theory to other areas of mathematics.
Week 1
The program begins with lectures introducing the basic impossibility techniques and lectures explaining fundamental concepts in areas of potential applications.
We plan to have tutorials on:
- Impossibility Results
- Ergodic Theory
- Symbolic Dynamics
- Smooth Dynamical Systems
Week 2
Research talks in Descriptive Set Theory, Ergodic Theory, Smooth and Symbolic Dynamics, as well as Expository Lectures, including on:
- Impossibility Results in Ergodic theory
- Complexity Theory
- Flexibility and Rigidity
Week 3
Topical Days (particularly Complex Dynamics with tutorial); Problem Sessions
