#colloq David Holcman : Modeling and computing of the extreme in cellular biology

An increasing number of questions in cell biology and biophysics can
be framed as rare stochastic events. After highlighting key examples,
I will present asymptotic computations of the Fokker-Planck equation
and discuss computational methods designed to accelerate stochastic
simulations. Focusing on synaptic transmission, I will show how
modeling and simulations have been instrumental in uncovering
molecular organizations, with predictions subsequently validated by
experimental observations at a nanometer level.
