The arctic circle is a name given to an observation initially made in the context of dimer coverings (or domino tillings) on the so-called Aztec Diamond. It consists in the appearance, for large lattices, of a curve that separates two domains: one where the dimer orientations are known with probability one, and one where they can fluctuate. Such a phenomenon occurs in several other models in two-dimensional statistical mechanics.
In this talk I will discuss the long distance correlation between the dimers in the fluctuating region, and how they may be understood in the framework of field theory. I will also make a connection with certain non equilibrium problems in one-dimensional quantum systems.
