Quid of character varieties?

We will do a little tour from the geometric notion of principal bundles with flat connections to the algebraic definitions of character varieties. I will draw as many pictures as possible, and state as few true theorems as I can. If time allows, I will mention a deformation of the algebra of global functions on the character variety in the SL2 case: the beloved skein algebra.
