Mathematical Variations in the Calculation of Planetary Diameters (910-1030)

by Guillaume Loizelet (IMT)

Europe/Paris
Description

Several techniques for calculating the diameter of planets were developed between the ninth and twelfth centuries. Each was based on a similar set of parameters, but used different mathematical approaches. The methods of historical epistemology enable us to understand the depth of choices that were far from being purely technical and practical.
