DESCRIPTION:\nWe present and study a 4--d Chern--Simons (CS) model whose g
auge symmetry\nis encoded in a balanced Lie group crossed module. Using t
he derived formal set--up\, \nthe model can be formulated in a way that in
many respects closely parallels that of the \nfamiliar 3--d CS one. In sp
ite of these formal resemblance\, the gauge invariance properties\nof the
4--d CS model differ considerably. The 4–d CS action is fully gauge inva
riant if the \nunderlying base 4–fold has no boundary. When it does\, th
e action is gauge variant\, the gauge \nvariation being a boundary term. I
f certain boundary conditions are imposed on the gauge fields \nand gauge
transformations\, level quantization can then occur. In the canonical form
ulation of the \ntheory\, it is found that\, depending again on boundary c
onditions\, the 4--d CS model is characterized \nby surface charges obeyin
g a non trivial Poisson bracket algebra. This is a higher counterpart of \
nthe familiar WZNW current algebra arising in the 3–d model. 4--d CS the
ory thus exhibits rich \nholographic properties. \n\nhttps://indico.math.c
