DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Phanuel Mariano (Union College)\n\nThe torsion funct
ion for a domain is a classical object in the theory of elasticity that\nm
easures the resistance to twisting for a rod with cross-sections given by
such domain.\nMotivated by this\, we consider an extremal problem for the
maximum gradient of the\ntorsion function\, ranging over bounded convex pl
anar domains. We show that this\nextremal problem admits a maximizer\, and
that any maximizer has a C^1 boundary\ncontaining a line segment on which
its gradient attains its maximum. The proofs are\nprobabilistic in nature
and use novel coupling techniques. This talk is based on joint work\nwith
  Krzysztof Burdzy and Ilias Ftouhi.\n\nhttps://indico.math.cnrs.fr/event/1
