 rithmetic analogue of the theory of differential equations in which deriva
 tion operators acting on  functions are replaced  by Fermat quotient ope
 rators acting on numbers. I will then review a series of arithmetic applic
 ations of the theory including: the effective Manin-Mumford conjecture\, f
 initeness  results for Heegner points (joint work with B. Poonen)\, const
 ruction of quotients of moduli spaces of abelian varieties by Hecke action
 s (joint work with A.Vasiu)\, and the curvature of the spectrum of the rin
