DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Matthew Foreman (University of California\, Irvine)\
n\nThematic 3-weeks programme at the Institut Henri Poincaré\, Paris\, Ma
y 18th to June 4th\, 2027.\nBeware: It was reported to us that scammers a
re sending to participants fraudulent e-mails about accommodation/fees. Pl
ease be particularly cautious about e-mails not coming from the organisers
nor from an @ihp.fr address. \nREGISTRATION IS FREE\, HOWEVER MANDATORY.
\nPresentation of the programme\nIn recent years\, there have been major a
dvances using techniques from Descriptive Set Theory to show\, in a rigoro
us way\, that many classical problems in Dynamical Systems are impossible
to solve. In this context\, a problem that can be set in a Polish space is
said to be impossible to solve if it cannot be settled using inherently c
ountable techniques. These groundbreaking results mostly lie in Ergodic Th
eory\, with further significant advances in Topological and Smooth Dynamic
al Systems.\nOne main goal of this program is to further enhance interacti
ons between Descriptive Set Theory and Dynamical Systems. It brings togeth
er researchers from different fields to settle some of the most famous pro
blems in dynamics dating to the mid-20th century.\nA second main goal is t
o expand applications of the techniques from Descriptive Set Theory to oth
er areas of mathematics.\nWeek 1\nThe program begins with lectures introdu
cing the basic impossibility techniques and lectures explaining fundamenta
l concepts in areas of potential applications.\nWe plan to have tutorials
 on:\n\nImpossibility Results\nErgodic Theory\nSymbolic Dynamics\nSmooth Dy
namical Systems\n\nAdditionally\, there will be Research Talks and Exposit
ory Lectures (primarily in Ergodic Theory and Descriptive Set Theory).\nWe
ek 2\nResearch talks in Descriptive Set Theory\, Ergodic Theory\, Smooth a
nd Symbolic Dynamics\, as well as Expository Lectures\, including on:\n\nI
mpossibility Results in Ergodic theory\nComplexity Theory\nFlexibility and
Rigidity\n\nMoreover\, we will have Problem and Discussion Sessions.\nWee
k 3\nTopical Days (particularly Complex Dynamics with tutorial)\; Problem
