Stochastic modelling of sequencing batch reactors for wastewater treatment

In this work we develop a stochastic model of a sequencing batch reactor from the microscopic scale to the macroscopic scale by means of a limit of birth and death processes. We study the existence of solutions of the obtained stochastic differential equation as well as some properties. We address the problem of the extinction of biomass in the model, and the implications for optimal control problems associated to the model, and we study the problem of the maximization of the probability of attaining the target prior to extinction.
